About

Who Are We?

A proposal to establish an area Council was first initiated by a number of individuals from the area who had undergone an OAK Partnership sponsored course named “Training for Transformation”. This course encouraged the formation of community development groups to address the needs of the area and avail of the assistance from relevant agencies and government departments.

Consequently, Tír na Móna was founded at a public meeting on the 20th May 1997. The elected committee were representative of Donadea, Coill Dubh, Staplestown and Timahoe and these representatives laid the foundation for area based committees. The function of the council was to facilitate communication and cooperation between each area. Area based committees were to determine the specific needs of their respective area and to identify existing resources within the area.

The primary aim of Tír na Móna was and is to communicate and consult with local community groups, to maximise the cultural, educational, social and economic potential of the area and to utilise existing resources to their full potential. To assist in the achievement of these aims a five year development plan was adopted, much of which has come to pass and much of which is ongoing. Additionally some committee members have undergone formal training in NUI Maynooth in Community Development funded by KELT.
